QN thy famed shores I loitered many a day,
In boyhood's hours, when all was bright and fair
As thy sweet face, unstirred by breath of air
To swell the lateen-sail, that would away
To destined port, nor seem to be at play
On bluest waters, 'neath a cloudless sky,
Wher sea-birds skim along, nor deign to fly,
Or diving in thy bosom, seek their prey.
The mountains, mantled with eternal snows,
Smile, in the sunshine, on thy broad expanse,
Reflecting ever their sublime repose,
Stateliest suitors for thy gentle glance.
Enchanting beauty! Number me with those
Who feel naught can thy loveliness enhance.
