FOOT-BALL.

HARVARD, 1 TOUCHDOWN; UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, 2 SAFETIES.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Probably there was scarcely a person in the crowd of 1000 that gathered to see the game last Saturday who was in any way prepared for the poor exhibition given by our team. Weight gave us the game it is true, but there is not a shadow of a doubt that in point of skill, in passing and kicking, we were fairly out-played. From the kick-off Harvard, carried the ball to Pennsylvania's goal and in 2 minutes Kendall secured a touchdown, completing our score, for Austin failed to kick the goal though the ball was almost directly in front of the bar. The redeeming feature of the next few minutes was the fine tackling of Adams which gained him the chief commendation to be bestowed on the team. Unfortunately for Harvard, he was interrupted in his good work by an injury, and was forced to leave the field, Houghton replacing him. Pennsylvania was soon forced to a safety, but immediately retaliated by sending the ball up the field aided materially by outrageous muffing. Good playing by Appleton, Kendall and Hartley saved the day, and Pennsylvania failed to score. Burgess, the freshman halfback played a comparatively good game, although this was his first appearance with the university team. His kicking was almost the only noteworthy contributions by the backs throughout the game. In the second three quarters the ball soon reached Harvard's territory, and stuck there with wonderful pertinacity. The only remarkable feature was the good catching of Burgess and rushing of Appleton and Hartley. Time was called in 25 minutes in order to allow the Pennsylvania men time to catch train. The only addition to the score in the second three quarters was a safety touchdown by Pennsylvania. The great result of this match must be in the shape of an exhortation by the entire college to the university to "brace up" before it is too late, for much improvement must come if we are now to equal our record of last year. The hard and conscientious work of the captain does not deserve the disappointing result of Saturday's game, and it is not to him that blame can in any manner be affixed. But that there is something the matter is perfectly evident, and it lays with him to find out its cause and nature. The contesting teams were as follows:

Harvard-Rushers, Adams '86; (Houghton, S. S.) Kendall '84, Bonsal '84, Appleton '84, (captain) Hartley '86, Bryant '84, Gilman '85; quarter back, Crane '84: half backs, Biddle '84, Burgess '87; full back, Austin '86. University of Pennsylvania-Rushers, Harvary, (Stoops), Sergeant, Thompson, Jones, Seal, Gray (captain); quarter back, Lindsay; half backs, Bell, Remak, Thayer; full back, Noble. Beferee, Capt. Haines of the Institute of Technology. Umpires-For Harvard, Mr. E. T. Cabot; for University of Pennsylvania, Mr. H. A. Fuller.
