Instead of the usual fall scratch races there will be a regular barge race between the upper-class crews, on Oct. 18. The race will be rowed on Back Bay from the well-known yellow house to the Union boat-house. The senior crew will begin work tomorrow; the juniors and sophomores as soon as they have got enough men. It is probable also that the Weld boat club will hold races on the same day for fouroars and other small boats, but nothing has yet been definitely decided upon.
The freshmen will not compete in the class race, but they will begin rowing immediately under the supervision of some of the old oarsmen. Later in the season scratch races will be held between crews of freshmen chosen by lot. Capt. Perkins will pick out in a few days a temporary captain to act for a few weeks. At the end of that time the candidates will choose a captain whose office will have to be confirmed, however, by the crew as finally picked out.
