Base Ball.

Harvard defeated the Williams College nine on Holmes Field yesterday by a score of sixteen to five. The game was characterized by Harvard's hard batting. The men also played a clean fielding game. The Williams nine fielded loosely, and their pitchers were far from effective. Cummings was in the box for Harvard in the first four innings, and he was rather wild, giving five bases on balls. Downer was substituted in the fifth inning and he held the visitors down fairly well. The Harvard team was considerably changed from the last game; Mason was tried in left field; Soule, who has been lame, was at short-stop, and Alward went to third base.

The game began at four o'clock promptly with Harvard at the bat. Dean got his base on pitcher's error, stole second and came home on errors. Howland got his base on balls, took second on a passed ball, third on Mason's sacrifice, and home on Trafford's clean hit. The latter stole second, took third on Upton's scratch hit, and home on the catcher's muff. In the next inning Harvard scored three runs on a missed third strike, a couple of steals, two errors and Linn's two bagger. Trafford, Cummings and Dean all made singles in the next inning, and Upton a two-bagger; and three more runs resulted. Howland started off the third inning with a hit, and Mason followed him with a single to left field. Trafford got to first on Howland's out; Upton got a life on the attempt to put out Mason. With three men on bases Alward made a cracking home run to right-centre and all the men scored. In the fifth inning Dean made a two-bagger, Linn a three-bagger, and Howland and Mason singles. Dean and Linn scored. Dean scored Harvard's last run in the seventh inning. His high fly was muffed by Durrand in right field, and he reached third on the error. Linn brought him in with his third hit.

Williams scored her first run in the second inning. Mapes was given his base on balls, stole second, took third on Arthur's sacrifice, and came in on Cummings' wild pitch. In the fourth inning Spaulding got first on Arthur's put-out and stole second. Campbell made a clean home run to deep centre, bringing in all the men. In the seventh Williams got her last score. Brown made a hit and was brought in by Cox's long three-bagger to right field. Cox just missed making a home run, being fielded out at the plate by Howland; Linn, Upton and Trafford assisting.
