Four-Oared Scratch Races.

The scratch races of the Weld Boat Club were rowed yesterday afternoon, and were as usual very amusing. On the whole the men rowed fairly well, bar there was a great deal of splashing, and disregard of time. Baker, the coxswain, seemed to be a mascot; for every boat that he was in came in first. As there were nine crews entered the races were rowed in three heats. In the first heat were crews number 2, 3, and 4. Crew 2 consisting of Wheetland, stroke; Shreve, 3; Hayward 2; and Kilbreth, bow, woe; crew 3 was second.

In the second heat were crews 5, 6, and 8. The winning crew, number 8. consisted o Dodge, stroke; Stone, 3; Purdon. 2; and Johnson, bow. It was a race between the other two crews.

In the third heat crew 9 won easily over crews 7 and 1. Crew 9 was made up of Lund, stroke; Brooks, 3; Harrison, 2; and Lee, bow.

When it came to the final heat. there was a good deal of a fight for Coxswain Baker, who belonged properly to all three crews. Finally it was decided to draw lots, and the lot fell to crew 2. Crew 8 took in Whiteside to steer for them, and Fay coxswained crew 9. Crew 8 had the inside course, crew 2 next, and crew 9 outside. Crew 2 took the lead and finished half a length a lead. It was rather dark to distinguish which of the other two was ahead. Mr. Kennedy, the referee, thought that crew 8 was ahead. The winning crew was composed of R. Wheatland '95. Shreve, N. Hayward '95, and J. T. Kilbreth '94.

The races for single wherries will be held today at 4 p.m. Entries close at 3 p.m.

The race will be rowed in two or more heats and a final. Cups given to first and second. Entry fee 25c. Entries so far, N. P. Dodge, J. Lund. G. DeC. Curtis, R. Stone, T. E. Spurr, C. Abbe.
