The New York and Boston papers record the receipt by Captain Hartwell of a letter from Bob Cook in which he states that it will be impossible for him to get away from his business in Philadelphia to spend the recess in New Haven coaching the candidates for the crew. It is also asserted that the navy cannot afford the expense of a trip to Philadelphia, like that of last year.
Since 1884 Cook has coached each successive crew during the Easter recess, and his refusal this year makes a set-back for Yale. Yale thus far has practically had no coach except Captain Hartwell. Captain John Rogers '87, has been there three different times; Captain Stevenson '88, once, and Percy Bolton '87, once. These three men have of late years been the right hand men of Mr. Cook. None of them, however, at least so they say, will be able to give the crew any attention this year, unless for a day now and then.
However, as has been said, history is likely to repeat itself.
