The faculty of the Lawrence Scientific School proposes to add to the courses of instruction at the beginning of the next college year two new courses, which extend over a period of four years each, and are intended to give, not only a thorough education in their respective branches, but also a general education in other departments of the University.
The first of these new courses is one in architecture, and the studies prescribed for each year are as follows:
First year-Rhetoric and English Composition, Elementary German, Elementary French, Mediaeval and Modern European History, Technical Development of Ancient Architecture, Architectural Drawing, Principles of Delineation and Freehand Drawing, Engineering, and Physics.
Second year-English Composition, German, French, Freehand Drawing from Architectural Subjects, Technical and Historical Development of the Mediaeval Styles of Architecture, Elementary Architectural Design, Mechanics and Strength of Materials, and Descriptive Geometry.
Third year-Freehand Drawing from Architectural Subjects, Greek or Latin, Fine Arts, Technical and Historical Development of the Renaissance and Modern Styles, Architectural Design, Geology and Mineralogy of Building Stones, and Building Construction.
Fourth year-Freehan Drawing from Architectural Subjects, Greek or Latin, Fine Arts, Architectural Design, Modelling, one elective, and a Thesis.
The second new course to be given is one in Mining Engineering, and the divisions of studies by years is as follows:
First year-Engineering Mathematics, Mechanical Drawing, Surveying, Experimental Physics, General Descriptive Chemistry, Rhetoric and English Composition, and French, German or Spanish.
Second year-Engineering Mathematics, Structural and Machine Drawing, Mechanism, Railroad Engineering, Mineralogy, Quantitative Analysis, Elementary Geology, and Geological Surveying.
Third year-Analytical and Applied Mechanics, Resistance of Materials, Metallurgy, Quantitative Analysis, Ore Deposits and Mining, and Petrography.
Fourth year-Hydraulics, Engineering, Mining, Ore-dressing, Industrial Applications of Electricity, Metallurgical Chemistry, Economic Geology, Advanced Field-work, Lectures, and Thesis.
