During the first part of yesterday afternoon the candidates for the freshman nine were given fielding practice. Two nines were then formed which played the rest of the afternoon. There was no special first nine. The batting was rather better than could be expected at this time of year and the fielding was fairly good. As yet there is no captain but one will probably be chosen before the Boston Latin School game next Saturday. The squad will be cut down considerably in a day or tow.
The first make up of the teams which represents the best material in the squad was as follows:
Morse, p.; Baldwin, c.; Jaffray, 1b.; Thompson, 2b.; Litchfield, 3b.; Nowell, s.s.; Barston, c.f.; Graves, l.f.; McMurty, r.f.
Lynch, p.; Davis, c.; Sherwin, 1b.; Montgomery, 2b.; Adams, 3b.; Galbraith, s.s.; McCall, l.f.; Henry, c.f.; A. Nowell, r.f.
Thompson captained one team and Adams the other. Most of the other candidates were given a chance to play in the course of the afternoon.
