Professor Shaler's Excursion to Cape Ann.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The attention of members of the University is directed to the geological excursion conducted by Professor Shaler on Saturday of this week. This is the first general excursion conducted by Professor Shaler in person for a number of years; it is open to all members of the University. Leaving the Union Station at 8.20 a. m., the party will reach Gloucester at 9.28. The morainal deposits in the central portion of the island will first be visited, a district known as Dogtown Commons. In this field is an interesting exhibition of frontal moraine showing a considerable variety of deposits. The field is particularly notable for the decayed boulders, some of which were originally of very large size, and for the eskers, one of which crosses the valley between the northern and southern morainal walls. Near Rockport the relations of well-developed drumlins to morainal deposits may be studied. On the seashore there is an admirable exhibition of dike phenomena. The formation of marine pebbles may be studied in those produced from the quarry waste thrown into the sea. The quarries exhibit the phenomena of jointing, and the peculiar accidents of "rift," "lift" and "cut-off," terms used by the quarrymen to indicate available lines of weakness in the stone, which they may use in extracting blocks. If the conditions favor, traces of submerged forests may be found. The excursion is recommended as one of the best which can be made within the limits of a day from Boston.

The management of the excursion will purchase mileage if a sufficient number of men make application before Saturday. Intending members will please advise Mr. T. A. Jaggar, Room 6, M. C. Z. Office hours, 9-10 a. m.
