THE UNIVERSITY CATALOGUE.

Besides the figures concerning registration in the University, published in the CRIMSON of Dec. 22, there are several changes worthy of notice in this year's issue of the University Catalogue.

The place left vacant in the corporation by the death of Martin Brimmer has been filled by Arthur Tracey Cabot. The members of the Board of Overseers whose term expires in 1902 are Solomon Lincoln, David W. Cheever, Geo. B. Shattnck, Francis Rawle and Edwin P. Seaver.

On the Board of Preachers the places of Dr. E. Winchester Donald, Rev. S. M. Crothers, and Rev. S. J. McPherson will be filled by Rev. Samuel D. McConnell of Brooklyn, Rev. Geo. Hodges of Cambridge and Rev. Wm. W. Fenn of Chicago.

Several important changes have taken place in the heads of departments. Professor Francke replaces Professor Bartlett as chairman of the department of German; Professor Sumichrast replaces Professor Bocher as head of the department of French; Professor Macvane gives way to Professor Taussig as chairman of the division of history and economics, while the latter is replaced by Professor Ashley in his former position as head of the department of political economy; Professor Norton retires from the chairmanship of the department of Fine Arts and is replaced by Professor Moore; Professor Byerly succeeds Professor J. M. Peirce as head of the division of pure and applied mathematics; while as chairman of the mathematics department the place of Professor Byerly is taken by Professor Osgood. The chairmanship of the department of natural history, left vacant by the death of Professor Whitney, is filled by the appointment of Professor Farlow.

Several new scholarships have been established, among them being the John Harvard scholarships to be awarded without application. The others are: Joseph Eveleth scholarships, three in number, of $200 each, to be awarded to students of the Scientific School; Virginia Barrett Gibbs scholarship (G. S.), with as income of $250; the scholarships of the Harvard Clubs of Chicago and San Francisco, and that of the Rocky Mountain Harvard Club; thirty-six University scholarships (16 L. S. S. and 20 G. S.) with an income of $150 each; the Robert C. Winthrop scholarship (G. S.) with an income of $200; the Normal School scholarships (L. S. S.) not more than eight to be awarded at any one time, to consist of $150 each; the Lucy Osgood scholarship, which is not yet available.
