Spirited Playing Scores Two Touchdowns.--Good Interference.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University eleven defeated Amherst yesterday by the score of 11 to 0 in a game which showed general improvement in the work of the team. The linemen played with more snap than previously and charged quickly, but did not throw their opponents back far enough. For the first time this year the interference worked smoothly and effectively.

In the first half the team showed considerable weakness in failing to score. The cause of this was fumbling and the slowness of the backs in starting. In the second half, however, the backs started quickly, followed the interference closely, and kept their feet, playing with a snap and dash that resulted in two touchdowns. There was no fumbling in the second half, and the plays worked smoothly.

Ristine, Devens and Kernan played a fast and spirited game, starting quickly and running well. Baldwin ran back kicks for good gains, got into the interference quickly, and used good judgment in directing plays. Sargent made several poor passes.

THE GAME IN DETAIL.

Amherst kicked off to Baldwin who ran the ball back 35 yards. Putnam gained 10 yards around right end. On the next play the ball was fumbled and, after another failure to gain, Mifflin punted to the 15 yard line. After short gains through tackle, Phillips punted to Devens. Mifflin, Devens and Putnam advanced the ball to the five yard line where Amherst held for downs. On tackle-back plays Amherst gained 10 yards and then punted to Baldwin. Devens gained 20 yards around left end. Putnam fumbled the ball on the 25 yard line but Baldwin fell on it. The next pass was poor and Harvard could gain nothing. Time was called with the ball on the 27 yard line.

Graydon kicked off to Swift, who ran the ball back five yards. Amherst tried its tackle-back formation without material gain and was forced to punt, Baldwin running the kick back 15 yards. Short gains by Ristine and Putnam advanced the ball to ihe 45 yard line. From here Ristine gained 25 yards through left tackle in four consecutive downs. Gains by Putnam, Mifflin and Ristine brought the ball to the six yard line where Harvard was given three yards on offside play. Ristine was sen over for a touchdown. Graydon kicked goal.

Amherst kicked off to Putnam, who ran the ball back 10 yards. Kernan took Putnam's place. On the next play Ristine made 18 yards around left end and this was followed by a gain of 20 yards by Kernan around right end. Gains by Ristine, Kernan and Mifflin brought the ball to the five yard line and on the next play Ristine went around left end for a touchdown.

On the next kick-off Baldwin ran the ball back 17 yards, and end runs by Kernan and Ristine of 22 and 30 yards respectively made up a total gain of 70 yards in three downs. Short gains through the line advanced the ball to the 20 yard line, when time was called.
