HARVARD, 9; COLBY, 1.

Nine Bats Poorly and Wins by Colby's Errors.--Andover Game Today.

The University nine defeated Colby on Saturday in a poorly played game by the score of 9 to 1.

Harvard's score was not due to good batting, at least five of the nine runs being the direct result of errors by Colby, whose play in the field was very weak. On the contrary the batting was discouraging. Coolidge, Wendell and Clarkson each made two of the six hits, the rest of the nine knocking out flies or easy infield balls, with a total of seven strike-outs against a pitcher who delivered a very slow ball. The base running showed some improvement since the last game, and the fielding was on the whole fairly good, with the exception of errors by Coolidge, Stillman, and Skilton. Colby's one run was due to poor judgement on the part of the battery.

Carr played hard and fast, and made the most of his chances. His catch of a short bunt fly was brilliant. Kernan at catcher failed to hold strikes, showing in this respect no improvement over his work in former games. H. Kernan played well in the field and batted well for his first game, his whole work showing good spirit.

In the first inning Coolidge reached first base on an error by shortstop, was advanced to second by Wendell's sacrifice, took third on an error by Palmer and came home on a double steal. Coolidge opened the third inning with a hit, stole second, reached third on Wendell's hit, and scored on a hit by Clarkson, thus making the only earned run of the game. Both Clarkson and Wendell stole bases and scored on an error by Pike. In the fourth R. Kernan got a base on balls, was advanced to second by H. Kernan's grounder to pitcher, reached third on a hit by Coolidge and scored on Wendell's hit into left field, Wendell and Coolidge both scoring on an error by Pugsley. In the sixth inning Wendell reached first on a base on balls, went to second on Clarkson's hit, took third on Meserve's error and scored on Randall's fly to left field. Again in the eighth inning Wendell reached first on an error by Meserve, stole second base, reached third on another error by Meserve and stole home without drawing a throw.
