INTERESTING TRACT GAMES.

Some Encouraging Work, But Weakness in Field Events.

The results of the annual University handicap track games which were held on Soldiers Field on yesterday afternoon were most satisfactory for this time of the year. The weather-conditions were perfect for running and in a measure contributed towards the good performances in several of the events. Although the results of many events were encouraging, great weakness was shown in others, especially the field events, excepting the shot put, in which F. H. Schoenfuss '04, established a new University record, with a put of 44 ft., 1 1-2 in. The scratch men did well, but were forced to fight against large handicaps.

In the mile run W. A. Colwell 2G., ran a very pretty race from scratch. On the back stretch of the third lap he started to work to the front and took the lead at the beginning of the last lap, holding it to the end. He finished in the fast time of 4 m. 28 s. and fifteen yards ahead of R. W. Walsh 3L., who came in second.

Another pretty and closely contested race was the finals in the 220 yards dash, which was won by L. Grill '04, with a handicap of 10 yards in 21-35 s. M. T. Lightner '03, and W. A. Schick '05, finished close behind in order.

In the half0mile C. L. Ames '06, with a handicap of 60 yards took the lead and kept it to the end, finishing in 1 m.59 3-5 s. The scratch men finished close together about two seconds later with J. W. Foster '03, in the lead.

The Freshmen made a good showing in the games. E. G. Dives '06 won the quarter-mile with 15 yards; C. L. Ames '06, the half-mile with 60 yards; H. H. Howland '06, the two-mile with 100 yards; and W. B. Jordan '06, the broad jump with a handicap of 9 inches.

The following men, as a result of their showing made in the games yesterday, will be taken on the training table this morning: Grillk, Sawyer, Buffum, Stone, Ayres and R. Robeson. These men will meet in front of University Hall at 8 o'clock,
