NEW LONDON, June 5,--The University crew squad arrived here about 6 o'clock this afternoon, and both the eight and the four-oared crews at once went out for a short practice row. Captain McGrew was detained in Cambridge so that he was unable to reach here until 8.30 o'clock, and Coach Higginson therefore took his place at stroke, the order being otherwise unchanged.
The coaching is still being directed principally at making the recovery slower and steadier, and at the same time preventing the accompanying unsteadiness of the boat and the tendency to hang at the full reach.
The four rowed over the course for a mile and a half, taking a spurt near the finish.
The orders were as follows:
University crew --Stroke, Higginson; 7, Lawson; 6, Filley; 5, Duffy; 4, Foster; 3, George; 2, Wolcott; bow, Swaim; cox., Litchfield.
Four-oared--Stroke, Dillingham; 3, Ayer; 2, Webster; bow, Hartwell; cox., Ivy.
