HARVARD, 5; CORNELL, 1

On Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon the University baseball team won from Cornell in a fast and exciting game by the score of 5 to 1. For the first five innings the score stood 1 to 0 in favor of Cornell, but in the sixth a strong batting rally by Harvard netted five runs and won the game.

The work of the University team was satisfactory and showed improvement in every department. Although for the first half of the game the men seemed unable to hit effectively, they gained as the game progressed a confidence and dash that was very encouraging after the noticeable slump during the game with Holy Cross. The batting rally, though slow in coming, consisted of a three-base hit a two-base hit, and two singles, and showed that the men have the ability to hit when necessary. The same confidence was shown in base-running, although in this respect some unnecessary risks were taken, noticeably when Leonard was caught at the plate in the first inning. Later in the game, Stephenson and Matthews made a well-executed double steal.

Coburn pitched effectively, and at times brilliantly. He struck out 14 men, allowed only six hits, and gave but one base on balls. Umstead, for Cornell, although he struck out fewer men, used excellent head-work, and allowed only seven hits. Coburn was supported by fast and accurate fielding.

Cornell's one run was made by Champaign in the first inning on a base on balls. Stephenson's passed ball, and a hit by Preston. No more runs were made until the sixth inning, when Leonard made a two-base hit and was brought home by Heilman's error, which also advanced Stephenson to third. Stephenson then scored on a pretty double steal. Dexter, the next man up, made a fine three-base hit which brought home Matthews. Kernan then reached second on an error by Brown, and scored on Spencer's single.

It will take the Fall River boat for New York, and while in Philadelphia will stay at the Aldine Hotel. Friday afternoon will be devoted to practice on Franklin Field. Saturday evening the nine will be entertained by the Harvard Club of Philadelphia. It will return to Cambridge Sunday morning.
