HARVARD, 5; PENNSYLVANIA, 1

A Decisive Victory.--Fielding Good, but the Hitting Not Consistent.

Saturday, on Franklin Field, Philadelphia, the University nine defeated Pennsylvania by the score of 5 to 1. Pennsylvania's only run was made in the second inning. For the next seven innings fast fielding by the University team easily kept its opponents from scoring again.

From the standpoint of fielding, the work of the Harvard team was very good. The men covered their positions thoroughly, threw accurately, and, with one exception, were sure on flies. Two fast double plays were made, one in the fifth inning, by Leonard and Randall, and one in the next inning by Kemble and Randall. Coburn, while he did not strike out an unusually large number of men, was extremely effective. He allowed Pennsylvania only one hit. In the fifth and sixth innings, however, he was rather wild.

Considering that the Pennsylvania team did not have its regular pitcher, the work of the University nine in batting was not all that could be desired. Four men were unable to get any hits, and only two men, Dexter and Stephenson, made more than one. With men on bases, the players were unable to hit effectively.

The first run was made in the second inning when Weeks, for Pennsylvania, got his base on balls, was advanced to second by Hare's sacrifice, and went to third on a balk, scoring on a wild pitch by Coburn. Stephenson began the fourth inning with a three-base hit to centre field. Kernan then made a long hit for a home run, scoring Stephenson. In the sixth inning Matthews hit to left field and by skillful base-running went to third on Stephenson's safe hit to shortstop. Dexter then made a fine single, bringing in both men. The last run was made in the seventh inning, when Leonard made a three-base hit to right field and came home after Randall's long fly had been caught by Weeks.
