DISCOURAGING PRACTICE

Many Substitutes in Line-Up Yesterday.--New Plays Successfully Used.

Yesterday's football practice on the whole was rather discouraging after the snappy work of the last few days, the first eleven scoring but one touchdown in a 25-minute scrimmage. The teams were much more evenly matched than has usually been the case, for the first eleven was composed almost entirely of substitutes, and three coaches played on the second team. The one redeeming feature of the work was the successful use of the forward pass and the onside kick by the first eleven. In fact, the only touchdown was scored on an onside kick, Sibley downing the ball over the line after it had been fumbled. They played an excellent game at end for the first team, recovering the ball several times on passes and kicks. Miller, on the other end, was also of good service in getting the ball on fumbles, and his tackles were hard and sure. At centre Nourse showed up well, not only in holding his position, but also in getting down rapidly under punts. He made several good tackles.

In the preliminary practice most of the time was devoted to work on the forward pass by the first eleven under the supervision of Coach Reid, the object being to show the men how to guard the man who throws the ball. While Kennard and Burnham were falling on the ball, Parker tried a number of goals from placement. Later the ends were given a short practice in catching the ball on the run. Burr, Kersburg, and Lockwood have been given a two days' rest.

O'Hare for the second team kicked off to Peirce, who fumbled, but finally downed the ball on the 35-yard line. Foster failed to gain through right guard, and punted, Orr stopping Browne, who got the ball on the 10-yard line. The second team failed to gain and O'Hare punted, Foster downing the ball on the 38-yard line. Newhall made three yards on a long run around left end, after which Grosvenor failed to gain on a forward pass. Foster made a quick kick from formation on which Sibley downed the ball over the line for the only touchdown. Foster missed the goal. In the rest of the scrimmage neither side scored, although the second team advanced the ball to the University team's three-yard line, where they were held for downs. The features of the last part of the scrimmage were the long gains made on forward passes and onside kicks, but both elevens seemed to lack striking power when near the goal lines.

The line-up for the scrimmage follows: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Hopewell, Miller, l.e.  r.e., Appleton, Coach Bowditch Robinson, l.t.  r.t., Philippbar, Coach Knowlton Peirce, Warren, l.g.  r.g., Brock Nourse, c.  c., Plumb Sibley, r.g.  l.g., O'Hare Warren, Peirce, r.t.  l.t., Coach Blagden Orr, r.e.  l.e., Rogers, Moore Newhall, q.b.  q.b., Browne Foster, Lincoln, l.h.  r.h., Rand Grosvenor, r.h.  l.h., Gilder, Greenebaum Wendell, Gray, f.b.  f.b., White, Jones
