New Degree Will be Awarded

The new degree with distinction in History and Literature, plans for which were formulated last year, will be awarded this year, for the first time, to all candidates in the Senior class who fulfill the necessary conditions for obtaining this degree. Owing to the fact of the recent establishment of this degree, there are only four candidates in the present Senior class. Statistics of the classes are as follows: 102 men in all have applied to Professor Wendell; acting chairman of the committee, since the establishment of the degree, 21 from the class of 1907, 22 from 1908, 57 from 1909, and two from 1910. Of this total 23 decided not to pursue the subject further, and 35, by the advice of Professor Wendell, decided to apply for the degree with distinction in other subjects.

During the present year the committee has done little more than assure itself that the schemes of work of the men under charge are judiciously arranged. Immediately after the Christmas recess the committee will enter into more close personal relations with the students at present under its direction, and will also call the attention of undergraduates and particularly of members of the present Freshman class, to the opportunities afforded by the University for planning their work in future years in such manner as to make possible distinction at graduation.

The members of the committee are: Professor Wendell, chairman; Professor Lowell, Professor Haskins, Professor Schofield, Dr. Merriman and Dr. Greenough.
