1907-08 ATHLETIC PROSPECTS

Encouraging Outlook in Baseball, Football, Track, and Crew.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Following is the outlook for the University baseball, football, and track teams, and for the University crew, based on the showing of the past season:

The Baseball Team.

The University baseball nine will lose only two players by graduation this spring: Captain Dexter and D. C. Brennan. It will be hard to find an outfielder to fill Dexter's place, and it will be many times more difficult to find a man whose influence on the team will be as excellent as has been Dexter's during the past three years. He has played an excellent game, both in the field and at bat, and has further proved his worth as a captain by his conscientious efforts this year.

It will be the first time in many years that Harvard will begin the season with a string of good pitchers. Hartford, whose work this season has stamped him as one of the best college pitchers in the country, will be available again, and Slater, who was used in several of the mid-week games this year, will also be in College. Hicks, the Freshman pitcher, only needs experience to become a remarkable twirler and will be a valuable substitute. In addition, there are Bush '09, Lincoln '08, and Lanigan '10, all of whom will be tried.

The infield will remain intact and, with the exception of Briggs, will be together next year for the third season. There is small chance of any of these men losing their positions and a few good substitutes is all that is needed. Currier, Simons, McCall and Leonard have played together for two years and will doubtless continue in their same positions. Briggs has fitted in splendidly at first base. Other infield candidates are Pritchett '08, who has substituted for Leonard in several of the games this spring, Brown '10, Gardner '10 and Hall '10.

In the outfield, Harvey, Pounds and Dana will all be eligible; but unless there is a marked improvement in their batting, there is a chance that one or two members of the hard-hitting Freshman outfield will be given a chance.

The Football Team.

As far as it is possible to estimate, the outlook for a successful football season next fall is brighter than usual. Only three regular men of last year's eleven and one substitute will be lost, leaving 10 men who played in the last Yale game to form a nucleus. Captain H. Foster, Jr., '07, right halfback for two years, H. E. Kersburg '07, right guard for two years, C. G. Osborne '07, left tackle, and S. Fraser '07 substitute centre, will graduate.

There will be a fair amount of firstclass and good second string material available next fall. The centre position will be well cared for by Captain B. Parker '08, who has played in that position three years. He will have an able substitute in H. B. Barney '08, who played two years ago. Other candidates will be C. J. Nourse '09, M. Dore '09, D. Plumb '08, and G. Hadden '10. The loss of Kersberg at right guard will be seriously felt, but A. Brock '08, H. M. Gilmore '08, J. P. Alley '08, W. D. Philippbar '09, E. C. Bacon '10, and H. Fish '10 may develop into valuable material. The most likely candidates are the first three mentioned, of whom one will probably be chosen to substitute for F. H. Burr '09, who will undoubtedly hold the position at left guard.

It is expected that W. Pierce '08 will return and hold down right tackle. H. Inches '08, S. Hoar '09, and M. D. Robinson '09 are likely substitutes for this or left tackle. At present there is no prominent man for left tackle. S. D. Warren '08 and W. D. Philippbar '09, together with some of the extra guard material may prove good men. There will be a great number of good ends available next year. G. M. Orr '08, D. P. Starr '08, J. MacDonald '08 and V. P. Kennard '09 of last year's team will all be back, and W. M. Bird '08, A. McL. Olds Sc., a former Annapolis player, B. Moore '08, H. F. Miller '08, R. C. Brown '10, G. G. Browne '10, and M. C. Peirce '10 will all be valuable men to choose from.

Unless D. P. Starr '08 is moved back to quarterback, it will be difficult to find a good substitute for M. L. Newhall '08, who will undoubtedly be first choice. G. S. Taylor '08, who was injured last year, is a promising candidate, and J. W. Simons '09, E. P. Currier '09, F. Cutting '09, T. H. Adams '09, S. Galatti '10, and D. Crocker '10 may show up well. There will be plenty of back-field material to choose from. J. W. Wendell '08, who played full back last year, will probably be shifted back to halfback, where he played for two years. C. Apollonio '08, A. B. Mason '08, D. B. Somes '08, H. Gray '09, G. F. Waterbury '10, and R. G. Kenefick '10 will be tried out at fullback. C. E. Lincoln '08, who played left halfback last fall, will be eligible, and will have as substitutes, J. deK. Gilder '08, B. J. Graydon '09, F. Cutting '09, W. Grosvenor '09, A. C. Gilbert '10, T. M. Gregory '10, H. Watson '10, and R. M. Page '10.

The Track Team.

With 10 of this year's point winners back and many promising men from the 1910 track team available the outlook for next year's track season is most encouraging. Of the "H" men on this year's squad, the following are not expected to be back next year; Captain W. Minot '07, A. G. Grant '07, W. A. Hanley '07, W. G. Howard '07, H. E. Kersburg '07, P. C. Lockwood '07, J. V. Onativia '08, and W. G. Waller '07. But the team will have the services of Captain L. P. Dodge '08, M. S. Crosby '08, H. F. Hadden '09, R. G. Harwood '09, A. B. Mason '08, W. M. Rand '09, O. F. Rogers '08, G. E. Roosevelt '09, R. E. Somers '08, B. T. Stephenson, Jr., '08, and M. B. Van Brunt '08.

The indications are that as usual the team will be stronger in the track than in the field events. Captain Dodge, when in condition, is a sprinter of the first rank and should materially weaken Yale's otherwise well-grounded hopes in the dashes. There is a great need of more sprinters for next year's team. E. K. Merrihew '10, F. M. de Selding '10, and A. T. Norton '10 should make a strong nucleus for the quarter-mile squad.

The team should be stronger than last year in the half-mile with Van Brunt and Whitcher back and H. Watson '10 and R. Warren '10 from the Freshman team. There is also considerable material for the distance runs.

In the hurdles, Rand, who won both events against Yale this year, should again be of great service to the team. He will be ably seconded by Mason, Rogers, M. B. Giddings '08, G. P. Gardner, Jr., '10, and T. S. Blumer '10.

The outlook for the broad jump, the pole-vault, and the hammer-throw is not encouraging. Stephenson and C. C. Little '10 are both good in the broad jump, but their shot-putting is apt to detract from their jumping at the end of the season. P. C. Haskell '08 and E. H. Ruch '10 may develop into point winners in the jump. With the loss of Grant, the team is left without any pole-vaulter of much ability, and in the hammerthrow, W. Peirce '08 and H. M. Gilmore '08 can hardly make up for the loss of Kersburg. In the high jump the outlook is better. Somers, Roosevelt, and Harwood have all done 5 feet, 9 or 10 inches, and may improve. Stephenson is very consistent in the shot-put and can be reckoned upon to defeat any man of his weight who may oppose him. He will be seconded by C. C. Little '10.

The Crew.

In the University crew the prospects for next year are very similar to the prospects for this year's combination. Three men will be lost out of the eight by graduation and one out of the four-oar. Farley's place at stroke will be the most difficult to fill satisfactorily. G. G. Bacon '08, the present stroke of the University four-oar, and his brother, E. C. Bacon '10, stroke and captain of the Freshman crew, will be the most likely candidates for the place. Number four will not be so difficult a place to fill, when R. L. Bacon '07 leaves College. Either of the men mentioned above would fit into the boat fairly well there, or C. Morgan '08, or J. E. Wald '10, number six on the present Freshman crew. The boat will also become va crew. The bow seat will also become vacant when R. M. Tappan '07, graduates. P. Wyman '10, C. Wiggins '08, and S. Marvin '10 are considered available men. Whether or not Coach Wray will deem it advisable to change about any of the men in the boat who return is not known; but it is quite possible that only one preliminary race before the Yale race will be rowed.
