During the recess, the members of the University hockey squad, playing as a scrub team, held five practice games with teams of the New York Amateur Hockey League at the St. Nicholas Rink, New York City.

The University Squad won three out of the five games played, losing only to the Hockey Club of New York and to the New York Athletic Club. The practice proved most beneficial in developing team play and a concentrated attack, which enabled the men to defeat the strong St. Nicholas team.

On December 27, in a twenty-minute practice game, the Wanderers were defeated by the score of 3 to 1, but later in the same evening the Hockey Club of New York defeated the members of the University team by a score of 2 to 3. On December 28, the St. Nicholas team was defeated in a fast game by the score of 6 to 1. During the thirty-five minutes of play, the members of the University squad outclassed their opponents in every department of the game. On December 29, the Crescent Athletic Club team was easily defeated in a forty-five minute period by the score of 11 to 1. The final game, played the following day, was lost to the New York Athletic Club by the score of 5 to 2.
