SECOND VICTORY FOR BROWN

Baseball Team Lost Listiess Contest, 3 to 2.--Game with Williams at 4.

The University baseball team lost a listless and slovenly played game to Brown yesterday afternoon by the score of 3 to 2. Nourse, who shut out the University team, 2 to 0, two weeks ago, was again in the box for Brown, but was not so effective as before. Hartford steadied after a bad first inning and did creditable work during the rest of the game.

Brown won the game in the first inning, when a base on balls and a home run gave a lead of two runs. For six innings thereafter the University team played a lifeless and stupid game and refused to score when runs seemed inevitable. Simons opened the seventh, however, with a home run and the possibility of winning instilled a little interest in the game. Brown was held without score in the last three innings, although three men got to first in the ninth. With two out in the last of the ninth the University team made its first real attempt to bring in runs by bunching hits. Lanigan singled over second base and Harvey hit to right field for two bases, scoring Lanigan. Harvey was left on second, however, as Currier was unable to hit Nourse.

Both teams showed the effects of the weather, which was not conducive to spirited play. The base running was slow and unintelligent on several occasions and an unusually large number of men were left on bases. The fielding was more satisfactory. Simons and Crocker not only led the team at the bat, but covered, the ground around second base faultlessly. Simons made three put-outs on throws from Currier to catch men stealing second. Regnier at second and Raymond the catcher excelled for Brown.

Two runs were scored by Brown in the first inning. With one out Dennie drew a pass and stole second. Raymond, who won the first game between Brown and the University team by bringing in two runs with a two-base hit, drove the ball to left centre for a home run. In the second inning three Brown men reached first, but a put-out at the plate on an attempted sacrifice prevented any scoring. In Brown's half of the next four innings the first man up each time got to first, but not until the sixth inning was another run produced. In that inning Staff hit to left and was advanced by Regnier's sacrifice that was fielded to second too late. Lanigan then missed a pick-up off Orcutt and all three runners were safe. The next man was retired on a fly to Harvey and then Giles hit to Hartford. Hartford fielded the ball to Currier and caught Staff at the plate. Currier made a rash attempt to catch Giles at first for a double play, but the latter was safe. In the meanwhile Regnier had rounded third and was well on his way towards home. Brown was painfully slow in returning the ball and Regnier was safe at the plate. A bad inning was ended by Nourse striking out.

Harvard should have scored in the first inning. The bases were full with one out, but the batters could not hit the ball ten feet beyond the plate. There were good chances for runs in the second, fourth, and sixth innings, but nothing came of them. Simons's home run, which came in the seventh with no men on bases, was followed by a scratch hit towards first base by Hartford. This opportunity was also lost as the next three men went out in succession. Crocker made a good start in the eighth by a short hit over third base, but no one helped him to proceed around the bases. In the ninth Simons went out on a fly to the first baseman and Marshall, who was put in to bat for Hartford, was called out on strikes. Lanigan then hit to centre and Harvey scored him with a double to right. Currier's strike-out ended the game:
