Fast Hockey Scrimmage Last Night

The University hockey squad held its final practice before the McGill game in the University rink in the Stadium last evening. The ice was in good condition, in spite of the warm weather, and the practice was most encouraging.

For about half an hour, the forwards were sent down against the defence, after which the first team lined up for a 30-minute scrimmage with the second seven. The presence of Morgan on the University team seemed to increase greatly the speed and team-play of the forwards. Gardner, who played regularly at left end last season, will not take part in the McGill game, but is expected to be back by the middle of next week.

In the first half of the practice game, the University offence played fast hockey and gave the best exhibition of teamwork seen this year. The second team forwards, however, followed back well and this, combined with good body-checking on the part of the second defence, prevented the first team from scoring more than four goals. The University defence was not completely successful in stopping the opposing forwards, two goals being scored against them. Both of these were caged by individual work and could have been prevented by effective body-checking. This is a department of the game which has not yet been fully developed.

In the second half, the line-up was altered, several of the second team changing to the first, and substitutes filling the vacancies on the second. The feature of this half was the excellent work of Kirkland, who scored three goals in quick succession for the University team.

The summary follows: FIRST TEAM.  SECOND TEAM. Leslie, Duncan, l.e.  r.e., Wigglesworth, Seamans Hicks, Kirkland, l.c.  r.c., Kirkland, Fraser-Campbell Morgan, r.c.  l.c., Duncan, Childs Hornblower, r.e.  l.e., Cutler Foster, c.p.  c.p., Browne Huntington, p.  p., Blackall Chadwick, g.  g., Smart
