THREE RACES CLOSE SEASON

Wind-up of Regatta Marks Conclusion of Fall Rowing,--Exciting Finishes Feature Yesterday.

The fall rowing season for all eight-oared crews will come to an end this afternoon when the more important races of the fall regatta will be held. The two University boats will race over the mile and seven-eighths course in the Basin at 4.20 o'clock; the final heat in the struggle for the possession of the Slocum trophy will find the three first dormitory crews together at the starting point at 4 o'clock; and the first and second Eliot and Thayer crews will contend in the last heat of the competition for the Filley cup at 3.45 o'clock. An exciting finish is looked for in each race, as the men are in splendid condition after a month of training, and the different crews seem to be quite evenly matches.

At present Gore Hall is leading the other Freshman dormitories in the competition for the Slocum trophy, and Eliot has a lead of 1 point over Thayer for the Filley cup. The standings are as follows: for Slocum trophy: Gore, 7; Standish, 4; Smith, 2. For the Filley cup: Eliot, 3 1-2; Thayer, 2 1-2. The basis on which the race between the first dormitory crews this afternoon will be marked is as follows: Winner 5 points; second place, 3 points; third place, 1 point.

A hard close race between the dormitory crews, and an equally thrilling finish in the club crew race furnished plenty of excitement for the second day of the regatta. Getting away together the three second dormitory crews rowed the first quarter-mile side by side. Gradually, however, the Gore boat began to creep ahead, and led the Standish crew to the finish line by a scant three-quarters of a length with the Smith crew a like distance behind Standish. Four boats lined up for the second heat in the competition for the Filley cup, which was won by the third Eliot crew, the third and fourth Thayer eights getting second and third respectively.

The order of the boats in yesterday's races was as follows:
