DUE REWARD TO SCHOLARSHIP

ANNOUNCEMENT OF ALL THOSE MAKING FIRST AND SECOND GROUPS.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Following is a list of those men who have received first and second group scholarships for the year 1914-15. The first group of holders of Scholarships is made up of those undergraduates whose work in the preceding College year entitles them to "very high academic distinction." No student is admitted to this group until his record for the preceding year, in all his courses, has been carefully inspected and the question of his fitness had been submitted to every one of his teachers. Only very high grades in his studies and concurrent testimony in his favor from a sufficient number of his teachers enable the Committee on Scholarships and other Aids for Undergraduates to recommend him for a position in the first group. John Harvard Scholarships are given only to students deemed worthy of a position in the first group.

The second group is made up of students of marked excellence who have not attained a position in the first group. Harvard College Scholarships are given only to students deemed worthy of a position in the second group.

The men who received first or second group scholarships prepared at 115 different schools, of which 39 are private, and 76 public. Twenty-two schools have representatives in both groups, totaling 29 men in the first group and 62 in the second, while fifteen have representatives only in the first group, and seventy-eight only in the second. The following schools have two or more representatives in the first group, and one or more in the second: Boston English High; Cleveland and University High; Groton; Lowell High; Newton High; Phillips Exeter; St. Mark's; and Volkmann. Boston Latin School has one representative in the first group, and 11 in the second; and the Boys' High School, Brooklyn, N. Y., has 2 in the first and none in the second.

In all, 207 scholarships were awarded, 50 being first group, and 157 second group. A number of third group scholarships, granted to students on grounds of special claim, have also been awarded.
