DEAD ELMS WILL BE REMOVED
First Tree, Over 75 Years Old, Pulled Down.--Others Will Follow, to be Replaced by Red Oaks.
Yesterday afternoon the old elm just east of Harvard Hall was pulled down. The tree was estimated by experts to be about 75 years old. It measured three feet in diameter and stood eighty feet high, being one of the largest and oldest in the Yard.
When asked about further plans of work in the Yard, Inspector Burke stated that several other dead trees would be removed in a short time, including several east of University Hall and around the Widener Library. Red oaks will be substituted for them.
