WILLIAMS LOSES AFTER RALLY

HITCHCOCK PITCHED FINE BALL.--THREE RUNS SCORED IN THE EIGHTH.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Although Williams made a desperate rally in the first half of the ninth inning the University's lead of five runs was too great to overcome, and the purple team was defeated by the score of 5 to 3 on Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon. The game was one of the best seen here this season, and up until the final inning Hitchcock had the visitors at his mercy, allowing only three scattered hits. Up until this time the University pitcher had given only three bases on balls, but in the ninth alone he passed as many again filling the bases. Frye replaced Hitchcock at this point and Hodge, batting for Bowen, hit the first ball pitched for three bases, scoring three runs. The next two men Toolan and Gillette, were easily disposed of, Toolan flying out to Clark and Gillette taking the Clark to Nash route.

Aside from Hitchcock's good pitching, the base running of the University team was the commendable feature of the game. Hardwick and Wingate were especially fast on the bases, the former's tally on Waterman's scratch hit between first and second being one of the fastest bits of base-running seen on Soldiers Field for some time. Bowen pitched good ball until the eighth when three hits were registered against him, one of them a double. These hits combined with an error netted the Harvard team three runs. Both pitchers were given good support, although none of the fielding was of the sensational variety.

Harvard scored its first run in the fourth. S. Clark opened the inning with a single over second base and reached second on a passed ball by Powell. Ayres's infield hit put Clark on third and he scored on Gannett's sacrifice fly to Gillette.

In the seventh Mahan singled. Hardwick ran for him and stole second. He scored when Ainslee bungled Waterman's hard hit grounder between first and second.

The remaining three came in the eighth. Wingate singled to left. Clark field to Toolan, but Wingate got to second on Ayres's out, Ainslee to Seibert. Gannett then singled scoring Wingate and going to second on the throw in. He scored when Hardwick hit for two bases between centre and left fields. Fripp then hit to B. Clark but the Williams shortstop muffed the ball and Hardwick scored. Waterman then went out, Clark to Seibert, retiring the side.

In the first half of the ninth, Hitchcock passed the first two men to face him; Statler, batting for Cutler, and Swain. J. Clark field out to Fripp, but Hitchcock then passed Young, who went to bat for Powell. Frye was substituted at this point and Hodge, batting for Bowen, hit the first ball pitched to deep right field for three bases. The next man, Toolan, field to S. Clark, while Gillette went out, S. Clark to Nash, retiring the side.
