Walter Sherman Gifford '05 has been appointed director of the Council of National Defence, the body which was recently recreated by act of Congress to mobilize and unify the industries of the United States. The members of the Council are the Secretaries of War, Navy, Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, and Labor. Fifteen sections and boards of the Council report to the director and through him to the members of the Cabinet, and each member of the advisory council has industrial committees to assist him.
In 1915 he rendered valuable volunteer assistance to the mayor's committee on unemployment in New York, and became supervising director of the committee on industrial preparedness of the Naval Consulting Board.
