WILL PROBABLY BE ENGAGED IN WAR HISTORY WORK AT WASHINGTON.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Robert Matteson Johnston, A.M., Assistant Professor of Modern History at the University, has, according to word received from Washington, been commissioned a major in the National Army. It is understood that Professor Johnston is to be ordered to duty in the Capitol, where he will engage in work connected with compiling an exact historical account of the war. Whether or not he will remain at the College for the remainder of the academic year has not yet been announced.

Eminent Military Historian.

Professor Johnston, who is accredited to be the foremost authority on military history in the United States at the present time, has held a prominent place in the History Department of the University. He has conducted courses in the College on many branches of that subject, specializing in the history of the French Revolution and Napoleon I, and in the political, diplomatic and military history of Europe from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day. His recent course, History 55, was intended for men in training preparatory to entering the service.

As chairman of the University Committee on Military Affairs, Professor Johnston has played an important part in the organization of the training corps, both in the spring of 1917 and again last fall, when the courses were reorganized at the beginning of the new college year.
