CHAPEL.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In the stress and strain of war times many duties have been neglected and many opportunities passed by in the University. Attendance at Chapel comes under both of these classes. For not even the increased demand upon the time of the student is sufficient to excuse the poor showing which has been made in the last year and a half both at Sunday services and at week-day prayers.

To attend Chapel is at once a duty and an opportunity. When presence at Chapel was made voluntary by the University some years ago it was the tacit understanding that the honor and good judgment of the men would ensure their continuance of the custom. But recently neither of these virtues appear to have exercised a favorable influence upon the attendance. Much praise is due, however, to those few men who have either created or-continued the admirable habit of going to Chapel, especially at a time when the appeal of the bell has been regularly falling upon the deaf ears of a great majority of the students.

But the past is history, and cannot be rewritten. We are commencing a new year. Can any member of the University make a more auspicious beginning than by a resolution to perform the duty and enjoy the opportunity of regular attendance at Chapel? It is a habit which will strengthen and deepen the foundations of character and self-respect. The few minutes each day devoted to a consideration of the deeper problems of life will give infinite reward and satisfaction to him who will but seize the opportunity.
