Owing to the unprecedented number of men who reported on Monday for the University and 1923 swimming teams, it has been found necessary to have the Freshmen candidates report today and hereafter at the Big Tree Swimming Pool on Holyoke street. Candidates for the University squad will continue to practice at the Boston Y. M. C. A. pool as previously announced.
Coach Harry Elport has been engaged to instruct the yearlings, and they will report to him three afternoons a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 4 to 6 o'clock. Freshmen may also get individual instruction at any time on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons if they wish it. Elport, who will take charge of the 1923 squad, was at one time the coach of the Radio School swimming team.
This practice will be continued for two weeks, and at the end of that time a tentative 1923 squad will be chosen to practice with the University team at the Y. M. C. A. pool. More than 25 men responded to the call on Monday, a considerably larger number than have reported at the first Freshman call in past years.
Good Material A-plenty.
The University swimming squad also is larger than ever before at this time of the season, and entries in all events, with the exception of the 220-yard race, are well represented. For the plunges, R..G. Hadley '20, P. Tishman '21 and C. F. Peters '22 are expected to be the strongest contenders of this season. A. Levi '21 and N. R. Knox '21 have done the best work in the diving events in recent years, while F. S. Stranahan '21 and W. W. Douglas '22 seem to be the logical men for the dashes. Captain G. Tilton '20 and G. S. Worcester '22 are, judging from their previous exhibitions, the best all-around men that have shown up so far this year.
