Small University Squad Disappointing to Coach "Eddle" Farrell.

The 1923 cross-country squad will open its season this afternoon when all prospective runners will report to Coach Farrell in the Locker Building at 3 o'clock. The men will be divided into groups today and outdoor work will commence at once. Next Monday the Freshman squad will start practice on the Belmont track with the University team. The most promising men will be put at the regular training tables Monday.

The Freshman track manager competition will also commence this afternoon. Candidates will report with the rest of the squad. Two positions are open, and both successful competitors will receive numerals.

With only 30 candidates out on the first day of practice, the smallest number ever reporting in the last ten years, the University and Freshman cross-country teams bid fair to suffer from lack of material unless more men come out within the next few days. The University runners have established a splendid cross-country record in the last decade of dual meets with Yale, losing only once in the whole period, and setting a standard that the succeeding teams will have to go far to equal.

Many more candidates for positions on the squad are needed at present, according to a statement from the cross-country manager, J. F. Keane, Jr., '21. No cuts will be made in the squad during the whole season, and less than an hour a day on the track will be required in preparing the runners. Coaches will be present at the track all afternoon making it possible for men to report for the workouts in spite of late laboratory sections or afternoon recitations.
