PROMISING PROSPECTS FOR WINTER TRACK TEAM

Practice to Start January 4--Squad Will Include 15 Letter Men--Season Opens January 31 With Melrose A. A. Games--Ends March 3

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

When winter track practice starts on Thursday, January 4, the squad will comprise a large number of men who figured prominently in University meets last year, besides a large group of numeral men from the 1925 Freshman team. Prospects for the season are exceptionally bright. Fifteen letter men will be available. These are Captain J. W. Burke '23, C. C. Carpenter '24, H. R. Davis '23, R. W. Fitts '23, R. D. Gerould '24, R. M. C. Greenidge 3E.S., C. R. Hauers '23, Percy Jenkins '24, E. G. Lund '23, J. E. Merrill '24, W. V. Miller '23, A. K. Murray '23, Campbell Newhall '24, Richmond Page '24, and R. F. Thayer '23. Of these, Fitts and Hauers are the only men who have won their letter twice; Fitts won first place in the 220-yard low hurdles, and Hauers placed first in the 120-yard high hurdles in the Yale meet of 1921.

In the dashes, Chase and Merrill stand out preeminently while good support from last year's squad and the 1925 Freshman team can be anticipated. All the dash event men will probably enter the 300-yard run. In the longer runs, Burke, Lund, and Newhall will form a strong nucleus, which will be materially strengthened by A. F. Jones '25, J. H. Smith '25, B. R. Cutcheon '25, and W. L. Chapin '25, all of last year's Freshman team.

Composition of Relay Teams

Short distance relay teams will be made up of sprinters and 300-yard dash men, while long distance teams will be composed of men in the 100-yard and mile runs.

With four letter men, Fitts, Hauers, Thayer, and Whitney in the running, prospects for hurdles are encouraging, while Jefferson Fletcher '25, who placed in both the 120 and 220-yard hurdles in last year's meet with Yale 1925 will undoubtedly show up well. In the running high-jump, Fitts, Gerould, Murray, with H. W. Abbott '25 and J. M. Greeley '25 should be preeminent while Jenkins and Page are outstanding in the broad-jump, Greenidge in the javelin throw, Carpenter in the discus throw, and Davis in the pole-vault will probably star in their events.

Coach Martin Returns January 10

Coach C. W. Martin will not be with the squad till January 10, and in his absence practice will be under the direction of Coach Farrell. The season will open on January 31, when a few men will be sent down to the Melrose A. A. games in New York. The climax will be reached with the Indoor I. C. A. A. A. A. meet at New York on March 3. Following is the schedule:

January 31--Melrost A. A. games at New York.

February 3--B. A. A. games at Boston.

February 17--K. of C. meet at Boston.

February 24--Harvard Dartmouth Cornell meet at Boston.

March 3--Indoor I. C. A. A. A. A. at New York.
