"AVOID ALLIANCES", SAYS SHAW DESMOND

Tells Liberal Club That Europe Is Disintegrating--Will Pull America Down Also, Unless We Steer Clear of Entanglements

"America must hold herself aloof from entangling political alliances with Europe", said Mr. Shaw Desmond speaking to the Student Liberal Club yesterday. "It is inevitable that America should be closely connected economically but not politically. The development of the United States should be quite separate from that of Europe.

"Capitalism is now in the throws of disintegration, and socialism is a bubble that has already been broken. Europe is disintegrating rapidly, and is now worse than it was at the time of the Armistice. International credit is breaking down, and the productive power of the European workingman has decreased 55 per cent. America can not stop this disintegration by political alliances, and therefore she should hold herself aloof.

"Politicians in the United States often rise above party, which is seldom the case in Europe. The United States has a comparatively clean conscience in regard to international affairs because of her policy of avoiding entangling foreign alliances".
