W. P. RAYMOND MADE SECOND BASEBALL COACH

Former Brown University Captain and Middlesex Coach Will Have Charge of Scrubs During Spring--Has Good Coaching Record

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Mr. Wendell P. Raymond of Brockton has been appointed second team coach to succeed Mr. George Gaw, who brought the seconds through a successful season last year. This appointment is subject to the approval of the Athletic Committee and if ratified Coach Raymond will take up his duties assisting Coach Slattery in the early season practice which will commence shortly after mid-years.

Coach Raymond graduated from Brown in 1909. There he had a remarkable baseball career, catching for four years on the Brown team, and leading it for two successive seasons. His work at the plate was as noticeable as his playing behind the bat, for he showed a consistently high batting and fielding average through all his years on the diamond.

After his graduation he received an offer to join the Red Sox but he did not accept it, having received a more advantageous offer from Binghampton of the New York State League. There he continued his high average through a long series of 30 games, turning in a batting average of .300 and a fielding score of .980. In 1912 he joined the faculty of Middlesex School as an instructor in mathematics, and took charge of the baseball squad there. He has had an exceptionally fine record in turning out successful Middlesex nines since he took the position of head coach there, and has now abandoned his position only to take advantage of a sabatical year leave of absence. At present he is studying at the Graduate School, but will again take up his duties at Middlesex next fall.
