HOLY CROSS WINS FROM CRIMSON 2-1

Gautreau Stars for Holy Cross With Expert Fielding and Batting--Starts Rally With Three-Base Hit

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Making an eleventh hour rally in the ninth inning the Holy Cross baseball team scored a tying run and quickly followed with a second tally in its 2-1 defeat of the University nine on Soldiers Feild yesterday afternoon. The game was a close struggle from the outset, each team making use of evcery advantage, but in the final inning Gautreau knocked a deep triple into left center and put the Crimson in a dangerous position. But this was only the beginning of the rally, for an error and two hits brought in the winning runs.

Goode and Horan Both Pitch Well

Goode pitched a steady game, allowing but six hits and several times getting himself out of bad holes. But the mound work of the visitors was also of the highest quality. Horan allowed four hits and kept the Crimson batters under control through most of the game. The fielding on both sides was almost perfect up to the last inning when the Crimson work fell down for a moment under the heavy hitting.

After a pitchers battle for two innings Goode knocked a clean single to left field and was quickly sent home by a long two-base hit to left center by Lincoln. At this point Horan tightened up, and struck out the next batter, while Gautreau ended the inning when he stopped a hard drive of Conlon's. The Crimson threatened again when Gordon hit to right field and was advanced to second and third on two sacrifice hits. Again it was the expert fielding of Gautreau that stopped the attack.

At the start of the ninth Gautreau put the Crimson in a dangerous position when he reached third on a long hit, scoring a moment later on an error by Janin. Two more hits put Leonard Du gan across the plate for the winning tally.
