MEMORIAL CUP FOR COMPETITION AMONG POLE VAULTERS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A cup, to be known as the George Guest Haydock Memorial Cup for pole-vaulting, will be awarded each year to the undergraduate on either University or Freshman track squads who shows, in the opinion of the Graduate Advisory Committee, not only improvement, but also enthusiasm, hard work, perseverance, and loyalty. The cup is being given by a few of Haydock's best friends in his class, 1916, for the purpose of encouraging inexperienced pole-vaulters. It will be on exhibition in Cambridge during the latter part of this week and at the end of the season, will be presented to the winner for this year who will keep it in his possession until next spring.

As a Freshman in 1913, Haydock vaulted only 9 feet 6 inches, but by constant practice he was able to attain one foot higher in his Sophomore year and cleared 11 feet 6 inches in this third year to tie for third place in the Yale meet. Finally in his Senior year, he vaulted 12 feet 6 inches in the Yale meet tieing for first place and creating a new University record which has not yet been broken. When serving as a first lieutenant in Company L of the 28th Infantry, Haydock was killed at Cantigny, France on May 28, 1918.

Time Trials Today

Both University and Freshman track coaches gave their squads a drilling yesterday that was light in comparison to the severe practices which began last week's training. Today, however, Coach Bingham will put his runners through time trials which will have a direct bearing in deciding which of the men entered will take part in the M. I. T. meet Saturday, while Coach Tolbert will hold time trials for his track men and competitions for his field men in order to decide what Freshmen out of the 150 entered, will represent the class of 1925 against Exeter Saturday. At 4 o'clock this afternoon those Freshmen who made the trip to Andover will meet at the Locker Building to elect a captain for the yearling team.

The following members of the University track squad have been entered for both the meet with M. I. T. on Saturday, and the Yale meet on May 13.
