Forty-one candidates reported at the first meeting of the University and Freshman cross-country squads in the Locker Building yesterday afternoon. Mr. W. J. Bingham '16, coach of the University track team for the last two years, Mr. E. L. Farrell, this year's coach, and Captain H. L. Pratt '23 spoke briefly, Mr. Bingham emphasizing the importance of cross-country work for men who intend doing any distance running on the track squad next spring. Mr. Bingham will supervise the work of the cross-country squad in addition to his work with the track men, while Coach Farrell will work with both University and Freshman harriers and Coach Mikkola will devote his whole time to the yearlings.

Following the meeting the entire squad took a two-mile run up the river, each experienced runner working with three or four of the new men. For the next ten days the work will be in Cambridge, the distance and speeds of the runs gradually increasing until a series of time trials will determine the men to compose the squad which will practice regularly on the Belmont course.

There is still an opportunity for men to join the squad by reporting this afternoon, while more Freshman candidates are needed for the competition for yearling manager.

The fall track season will start at 3 o'clock this afternoon when all candidates for the University and Freshman teams will report at the Locker Building on Soldiers Field.
