HOLY CROSS VICTORY ENDS PITCHING FEUD

Young Allows Only Two Hits and Lets Only Three Men Reach First--Carroll Allows Only One Crimson Hit

For the third time in two years the University baseball team went down to defeat before the Holy Cross nine, losing by the score of 1 to 0. Both teams played perfect baseball with the exception of a single error by Gautreau which allowed Thayer to reach first. The game soon resolved itself into a battle between the rival pitchers, both supported by alrtight fielding. Carroll, who lost his first game of intercollegiate baseball last week in the Holy Cross-Princeton game, pitched a beautiful nine innings, striking out seven men and allowing only one hit which Gordon scored in the first. Only three Crimson men reached first, Gordon on his hit and Hammond and Thayer on base on balls. Young's record was almost as good, allowing the purple only two hits and letting only three men reach first. On both sides it was a case of three up and three down until it became monotonous.

The winning run came in the sixth inning when with one out Carroll came up and scored a hit. On account of an injury sustained in the Princeton game, Tunney, another moundsman, was put in to run for him. Gautreau, the next man up, scored a single which advanced Tunney to third, and Walch's fly to deep left gave him ample time to come home. This was about all the excitement the team could stand and after that no one else reached first. While the visitors were unable to hit safely they were at no loss to knock the ball all over the diamond, keeping everyone and especially the outfielders busy. Seventeen men were put out on flies, twelve of which went well into the deep field, giving opportunity for several pretty catches.

The University did not once threaten to score nor did they hit nearly as consistently as the purple invaders.
