McGLONE BACK FROM SIX-DAY QUARANTINE

Cheek Team A Quarterback for First Time With Gehrke, Miller, Zarakov Carrying Ball--Many Substitutions

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

For the first time in over a week the University football elevens and scrubs did not scrimmage yesterday. Practically the whole afternoon was devoted to signal drill and defensive practice against an aeriel attack.

McGlone reappeared in uniform after his six-day quarantine as a carrier of the diphtheria germ, but did not take an active part in the practice. His time away from Soldiers Field was not wholly wasted, for during his brief rest he gained eight pounds, which brings him back to his normal weight of 150 pounds.

The principal interest for those who follow the development of the Crimson team closely was the backfield combination which Ceach Fisher started in Team A. Cheek, for the first time this season, was the leading choice for the quarterback berth. Gehrke and Miller, returned from their brief sojurn on the doctor's list, both took their former positions, and Zarakov, who has been but a substitute all fall, was given the remaining position behind the line.

New Combination Death on Passes

On the defense Gehrke and Miller played close to the line, while Cheek and Zarakov stationed themselves well back.

Judging from the number of incompleted forward passes made by the scrubs, the new combination, ably assisted by Captain Greenough's line, played well.

What it could do on the offense is uncertain, although not completely so, for the ability of each individual is well known. Cheek, as a ground-gainer knows few equals, on the Harvard squad at least. As a field general he is an entirely unknown quantity, although he must have shown Coach Fisher something to have advanced from Team C to Team A in one week. Gehrke has won laurels both as a punter and a valuable defence man, to say nothing of his ability at interference. For an all-round useful man in the backfield he has Miller, who weight over 200 pounds and runs the 100-yard dash in under ten seconds, For running back punts, fast off-tackle plays, or end runs, Zarakov proved himself worthy last year as a Freshman. Yesterday's first backfield, then, has speed, weight, kicking ability, and experience. What more could be asked for a well-rounded backfield?

Many Tried in Team A Backfield

These four, however, by no means monopolized Team A yesterday. They were merely Coach Fisher's first choice, and were soon replaced by others. In fact it seemed as if nearly every possible combination was tried. Zarakov exchanged places with Cheek, Spalding went in for Zarakov, Stafford for Spalding, and Samborski, Hammond, and Puffer for the other three. It was difficult to tell which group worked out best.

The same line: E. H. Bradford, Greenough, C. H. Bradford, Adie, Theopold. Nash, and Beals, started the practice. Almost every substitute got in before the afternoon was over, including Dean and Chase, who were again in uniform.
