The Harvard University Orchestra, the Pierian Sodality of 1808, has just announced the opening of its 118th concert season with a new conductor, G. A. Brown '25, of Melrose Highlands. The former conductor, W. H. Piston Jr. '24 of Boston, who led the orchestra for the last three years, is now in Europe continuing his study of music.

The new conductor has received orchestral training under G. M. Chadwick and Walter Goodrich. The list of conductors under whom he has played includes Karl Muck, Ernst Schmidt, Pierre Monteux, Emil Mollenhauer, Henry Hadley, and Giorgio Palacco. He began conducting at an early age, and he is now the assistant conductor of the Melrose Orchestra Association. During the past season, he has also been conductor of the orchestra of the South End Music School in Boston. In the Pierian Sodality Orchestra, he has played as first cellist for the past three seasons.

The policy adopted last year of playing music by contemporary Harvard men proved so successful that it will be continued this season. A concert will be given at Wellesley, as was done last year, and at either Smith or Mt. Holyoke. The annual Boston concert at the Copley Theatre will be held shortly before Christmas.

In the spring another trip to New York is planned. Last year the concerts there in Aeolian Hall caused such favorable press comment that the society plans to broaden its field this season and give several concerts both in New York and en route from Boston.

The orchestra needs new members in order to carry out its plans. Trials will be held next Monday evening from 7.30 to 10 o'clock in the Pierian Sodality room in the Music Building. These trials are open to all members of the University, including Freshmen. Candidates must bring music and instruments.

There is also to be a managership competition, open to Freshmen and Sophomores, beginning Monday at the Pierian office in the rear of the Music Building. Candidates may report between 2 and 4 o'clock. The winner will become manager of the Pierian Sodality Orchestra next year.
