The Union announced yesterday that Colonel Charles Wellington Furlong will speak in the Living Room on Thursday, December 11.
Colonel Furlong is an artist by profession and has lived a life of remarkable activity, not only in the western section of the United States, but in all parts of the world. It was in 1904, while exploring the northern part of Africa, that Mr. Furlong discovered the wreck of the United States frigate Philadelphia in Tripoli harbor, where it had been since it was sunk by Lieutenant Stephen Decatur of the American Navy just one hundred years before.
Gave Collections to University
In 1907 he transferred his field of activity to South America where he made extensive explorations. His discoveries during the next three years in Patagonia and Venezuela enabled him to make valuable collections which he later gave to the American Museum of Natural History and the Peabody Museum of the University.
Rode "Sharkey" to Championship
In 1912 Colonel Furlong turned his attention to the West of this country, and has maintained a summer home in Pendleton, Ore., ever since. He visited among the Indian tribes of the West for a year, and in 1914 he won the world's rough-riding championship by riding the bucking bull "Sharkey." The same year he crossed the Alantic in a 22 ton schooner and proceeded to the north and west coasts of Africa where he explored many islands.
Won Medals In War
During the war Mr. Furlong served at first in the cavalry but later was assigned to the military intelligence section. In addition to being an extensive contributor to magazines, Colonel Furlong has won recognition as the author of several books on travel and adventure. He holds medals from several foreign governments in recognition of his services during the war.
Colonel Furlong has spoken at the Union before on the subject of "The Passing of the Old West" and he will probably speak about the West and western life this year.
