UNIVERSITY CREWS HAVE PERMANENT PERSONNEL

POOREST CREW BETTER THAN LAST YEAR'S BEST, SAYS STEVENS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With approximately four weeks of rowing behind them, the present line-ups of the first three University crews are for the most part permanent. This was the substance of an announcement made by Coach Stevens yesterday.

Crew X has maintained practically its same seating order since the completion of the first week of practice. Stroked by last year's stroke-oar, Robert Winthrop '26, and containing Captain S. B. Kelley '25 at bow and G. R. Johnson '25 at sent five, this eight contains all the letter men available, with the balance made up of veteran material. J. W. Adie '26, the final member of the crew which rowed against Yale last June still in college, is at present playing football.

Platt Replace Hubbard on X

The one change that has been made in the line-up of crew X has been the shifting of J. P. Hubbard '26 from seat seven, and the substitution of last year's Freshman captain, Geoffrey Platt '27 in that position. Coach Stevens made the change originally for a trial, but Platt proved so satisfactory in that difficult position that he has probably won it for the duration of Fall rowing.

Crews Y and Z have undergone constant changes during the past two weeks. Their present seating order, however, will probably be permanent. Should there be a continuation of the favorable weather which has greeted the crews during the past week, Coach Stevens hopes to race these three eights over a course, the distance of which he has not yet determined. Crew X has shown as decided a superiority over Crew Y as the latter eight has shown over Crew Z in the workouts thus far. Nevertheless Coach Stevens was emphatic in declaring Crew Z "a consider- ably better eight than any bunch I had out here last Fall".

Competition Keen for Places

F. P. Weymer '26, Richard Trimble '26, on Crew Y, and C. F. Darlington '26, on Crew Z are attracting attention this Fall, and will undoubtedly be given a chance on the first eight during the year. The keen fight for positions this fall is evidenced by the regularity with which men on each of the first three eights report for practice, in contrast with candidates for some of the other crews.

The crews rowed yesterday as follows:

Crew X.--Stroke, Robert Winthrop '26; 7, Geoffrey Platt '27; 6, J. W. Gates '27; 5, G. R. Johnson '25; 4, D. C. Gates '26; 3, O. F. Righter '26; 2, C. O'D Iselin '26; bow, S. B. Kelley '25; cox., C. S. Heard 3E.S.
