COACH STEVENS WATCHES OVER FIRST THREE CREWS

COACH SPUHN WORKS HARD WITH LIGHTWEIGHT CREWS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With the first week of rowing completed, Coach Stevens continues to take personal charge of three crews which he has designated under the letters X, Y. and Z. The unusually large squad which reported this fall will enable the Coaches to develop eights without regard to material which may report for work on the machines this winter.

Captain S. B. Kelley '25 is rowing bow on crew X. Robert Winthrop '26, at stroke, and G. R. Johnson '25 at seat 5 are the other veterans in this boat. Crew Y, with the exception of Sutherland at number six, is composed of members of last year's Freshman squad, and with W. L. Rice '27 at stroke is attracting Coach Steven's attention. Crew Z is made up of men, many of whom saw service on the second University eight last year. This crew promises to furnish spirited opposition later in the fall in the sprints with other boats.

No First Crew Yet

Coach Stevens announced yesterday that he had made no effort as yet to boat the men into first, second, and third crews. He expects to do this later on, however, and the competition for seats in his first eight will be keen.

An innovation in class crew rowing has been made by Coach E. A. Brown. Men assigned to him were given the opportunity to vote on the project to form all candidates into crews as members of two clubs, the Eliot, and the Thayer. They expressed their approval, and are now practicing for races which will determine the supremacy of one of these clubs.

Class crew men also picked their first eight. Two men were given the opportunity to choose, and the first four starboard and the first four port men made up the first boat in each club. On October 31, Coach Brown expects to race the boats. Following this he will pick class crews and spend about two weeks more working with them.

150-Pound Prospects Good

With 60 candidates out for the University 150-pound crew, Coach F. W. Spuhn is starting the fall season with every prospect of a successful crew. All but two or three of last year's men are back. With this nucleus the crew should be able to repeat last year's record. However the boat's seating is by no means a foregone conclusion. Many of last year's competitors are out, and there is excellent material among the Sophomores.
