PROBATION IS BUGBEAR OF HARVARD BASEBALL

"An ineligible player is a disgrace to Harvard" was the keynote of the speeches at the meeting of about 50 baseball candidates at the Varsity Club last night. T. J. Campbell '12, Dr. Channing Frothingham '02, W. F. Reid Jr. '01, and Coach E. W. Mahan '16 were the speakers.

Mr. Campbell opened the meeting by stating that "ball games are not won by men on probation." He introduced Mr. Reid, who was captain of the nine in 1900 and 1901, and is a member of the Baseball Advisory Committee. Mr. Reid declared that the present slump in baseball must end. The first radical step in that direction he said was the appointment of a graduate coach so that the Coach, the Captain, and the Committee will be free from friction. He emphasized the fact that the midyear examinations call for a sacrifice, and the players must make this sacrifice if the University is to have a winning team.

Dr. Channing Frothingham was the next speaker. He stated that it was easier to stay off probation than to get off. The cases of most, men he said need only a revision of their daily program to bring their marks up. The Committee, he pointed out, intends to help men find their failings and hopes to be able to help them with advice.
