When Dr. Percy Stickney Grant spoke a short time ago in the Union he presented the Modernist side of the controversy which has for many months been such a disturbing element in the Protestant church. The other half of the case will be clarified this evening when Dr. John Roach Straton, one of the most prominent Fundamentalists in the country, talks on the general subject of "Evolution vs. God". Dr. Grant attracted one of the largest student audiences that has ever listened to a visiting preacher; and it is almost a certainty that equally large numbers will be present tonight to hear the arguments of his foremost opponent.
Dr. Straton is a preacher of eloquence and force. Even in the face of a serious division of opinion in his own church, he lost neither his courage nor his confidence in the truth of his convictions; and although hailed by his adversaries as almost everything from a stubborn reactionary to a revolutionary sensation monger, he has remained firm in his opposition to the idea of evolution in religion. Dr. Grant believes that religion, like the majority of other things, is subject to change with the passage of time; it will be interesting to see how Dr. Straton meets this theory with his own belief in the infallibility of the original doctrines of Christianity as presented in the Bible.
