THREE PITCHERS FAIL TO PUZZLE CORNELL

Cornell Starts Piling Up Tallies in Opening Session-Milligan Pitches Steady Game for Red and White

The Crimson nine, particularly the pitchers, proved to be lavish entertainers Saturday by presenting their Cornell visitors with an 11 to 1 victory and displaying for their benefit, all sorts and varieties of baseball, mostly poor. Weak pitching, slovenly fielding, and ineffectual batting combined in the most dismal showing of the season.

Spalding, hitherto undefeated, was found for three big runs in the opening. Captain Bickley walked with one out and took second on a single by Henderson, football captain-elect. Dupree fouled to Check, but Capron drove home two runs with a triple to left which McGlone misjudged badly. Capron scored a moment later on a single by Frantz. For three innings thereafter Spalding was master of the situation, and the Harvard stock rose, as the Crimson butters were hitting Milligan hard if not safely.

Toulmin Enters Box in Fifth.

The fifth, however, saw Spalding's finish. Milligan singled and took second on Rossomondo's grounder to Campbell. Bickley lofted to Jenkins. Honderson was passed, but the strategy failed, as Dupree singled to center, scoring Milligan. Capron singled to left, and everybody scored when McGlone let the ball go, through him. Exit Spalding, enter Toulmin, and the side was retired without difficulty.

Toulmin was less successful in the sixth. Milligan singled, Rossomondo walked, and Bickley laced a one-base drive to right, scoring Milligan, Rossomondo came in on a passed ball by Larrabee. Tow hits and an error by Jenkins' gave the Red and White another run in the seventh.

Brown Goes to Mound in Eight

Coach Slattery sent in Brown to show his left handed stuff in the eighth, and the southpaw proved the most effective of the three University moundsmen. One score trickled across in the eighth on a bit, a sacrifice, and another passed ball by Larrabee. With that single exception Brown was unhittable in the two innings he officiated on the rubber.

Meanwhile sensational Cornell fielding and steady pitching by Milligan was turning the University nine back scoreless inning after inning. The Ithacan infielders robbed the Crimson hitters of several apparently safe hits. A one-hand step by short stop Davis on McGlone's hot shot over second in the first inning and Bickley's back-hand stab of Gordon's drive in the third were the most phenomenal of the fielding features. The Crimson escaped a shut-out when Rogers reached second on an error by Henderson in right field and scored on a single by Campbell.
