1928 BASKETBALL FIVE PREPARES FOR TILTON

Slocum's Sprained Ankle Hurts Chances on Saturday--Tilton Expected to Produce Strong Quintet

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Freshman basketball quintet may open its season on Saturday against Tilton Seminary without A. W. Slocum, a promising forward who is suffering from a sprained ankle. According to Coach Drohan, however, the injury is mending very rapidly, and he holds out hope for Slocum's appearance in the line-up on Saturday.

Reports from the New Hampshire school indicate that the invaders have more than a threat of avenging the 15 to 9 defeat at the hands of the 1927 five. Captain Woods will bring a team that is reputed to be as strong as that which trounced the 1926 quintet two years ago. The entire squad has been practicing together during the end of the Christmas vacation but this will be the first game of the season for both teams.

Christmas Recess Slows Up Team

Coach Drohan was not very optimistic concerning the prospects of the Freshman five yesterday afternoon. The two weeks interruption in practice caused by the Christmas recess has played havoc with the dribbling and pass-work developed before the vacation.

Slocum and Baldwin showed up very well in the practice game with the Second Year Law quintet which the 1928 five easily won by a 33 to 19 score. At that time Coach Drohan called them the best pair of forwards that a Freshman team has produced since the 1924 five.

McCurdy or Green Probable Center

McCurdy and Green are still fighting for the center berth, with either as a likely starter Saturday. Oothout and Meisenbach, who have been doing very well at the guard positions so far, have a slight lead over their closest rivals, Barbee and Fordyee, the latter a football star who is improving rapidly after a slow start.

The squad was finally cut to 20 men yesterday by Coach Drohan and he expects to keep this squad intact for the remainder of the season.
