Ithaca, N. Y., March 2.--Captain B. H. Whitbeck '29 of the Harvard tennis team and M. T. Hill '30 today reached the double semi-finals of the second annual Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Tournament. Their advancement places Harvard in a close race for second honors in the tourney. Princeton with continued singles victories has amassed enough points to make it sure of the team trophy.
The feature of the tournament was the singles match between Hill and J. W. Van Ryn of Princeton, a Davis Cup player, in which the Harvard player lost out, 6-4, 6-3 in a contest replete with fast playing. Hill had, in the second round of the tourney, defeated McDonald of Swarthmore 6-4, 6-3. Both Hill and Van Ryn drew byes in the opening round and their match in the third bracket was closely followed by the spectators. Arthur Ingraham '30 succumbed to Lavine of Pennsylvania in the first round after a hard fought match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Larned Cup for the winner of the singles competition seems certain to be won by Van Ryn, who has advanced to the finals with his only strong opposition from Hill.
Princeton with points amassed in every round is acknowledged the certain winner of the team trophy which came into Harvard's possession last year when it piled up 24 points.
The doubles matches to be completed tomorrow point to a hard finals match between Whitbeck and Hill of Harvard and Van Ryn and Appel of Princeton.
Harvard is leading Lehigh, Pennsylvania, and Williams in a hard battle for runner up in the tournament.
