BRISK SCRIMMAGE ON SOLDIERS FIELD

A. L. Devens '30, Charles Devens '32, Myerson, and Wood Return to Practice--Greeley Seriously Hurt

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Beginning the second week of practice in preparation for the Bates game, Coach Arnold Horween '20 ran his first squad through a stiff scrimmage against the Seconds yesterday in which the University team emerged victor by a 13 to 0 score. Horween kept his men at it steadily, substituting frequently and halting the play to give instructions.

The total on the injury list reached five yesterday, when Greeley, O'Connell and Gleason were forced to join the Gilligan brothers, as unable to play. Greeley suffered the worst injury of the year, dislocating his elbow. He will be on the sidelines about five or six weeks. O'Connell and Gleason are out only temporarily, however, suffering from blisters on the feet. They are expected back today.

Four of the men injured in the first week's practice returned today. A. L. Devens '30, Charles Devens '32, and Myerson were in uniform while Wood called signals in civilian clothes with Fullam running out the plays for him.

The University team was given the ball in midfield starting the scrimmage and immediately made two first downs Mays, sophomore back, ripped off two yards putting the ball on the Second's 15 yard line. Harper added four yards and then Putnam uncorked a lateral pass to Mays who ran the remaining yards to a touchdown Putnam's kick was good.

Mason Scintillates

After the touchdown the Seconds took the ball on the 50 yard line. Three plays netted the scrubs but five yards and then Fincke punted to Putnam who was downed on his own 15 yard line. Here the University team started a drive that finally culminated in a score. Mason and Putnam completed the only forward of the day, one which was good for 25 yards and then Mason speed around end for 23 more yards. Five rushes at the tired second team line put the ball over with Mason carrying it on the final attempt. Putnam's kick was high and wide.

Horween gave the ball to the first team on its 20 yard line, but after three plays called a rest. Beginning play again from its own 20 yard line the University team gained 40 yards mainly because of Batchelder's 30 yard run, before Nawn of the Seconds knocked Huguley's pass into Parks' hands who subsequently ran to the University 10 yard stripe until he was stopped. Here the first team held and Gildea intercepted a pass on the five yard line, running out to his own 16 yard mark. Batchelder crashed through tackle for 11 yards and after he and Mason completed a lateral Coach Horween put in team C. From here on the play was halted continually for substitutions and instructions.

Coach Horween intends to give his squad two more hard tests against the Seconds this week on Wednesday and on Friday. He intimated that he would switch his backfield several times during the week in order to give all the men a chance behind the team A line.
