In the Soldiers Field premier of Rugby football played Saturday when the newly formed Harvard fifteen met the U. S. Marines of Philadelphia, the Crimson forces went down to a 26 to 0 defeat. Lack of experience hampered the Harvard, team, only one of which has ever before actively played the game. On the other hand, the Marines have among their number four candidates for the Olympic team in Zimmerman, Presley, Wingo, and McCaffery.
In the first half the Marines met strong opposition at the hands of the Harvard players, and in spite of the score, the quality of play on both sides was very high. At no time-during the match did the leatherneck have things entirely their own way, while the game was throughout a good exhibition for both teams.
Considering the short time that the Harvard team has been together, the results that have been obtained are not at all unsatisfactory, the 11 to 0 loss to Yale being a comparatively small score for Rugby.
The summary: Score--U. S. Marines 26, Harvard 0, Touchdowns--Gerard 2, McCaffery, Presley, Wingo. Converted goals--Zimmerman 4, Penalty goal--Zimmerman. Referee--J. F. Jennings, Linesmen--Lt. J. J. Tavern, and J. McCarthy. Time--Two 35-minute periods.
